Three-Point Seat Belts

The familiar shoulder-and-lap arrangement: the belt runs diagonally across the chest, then across the hips, anchored at three points around the seating position.

Overview

Three anchor points, and why they matter

A three-point belt takes its name from where it is secured: two points across the hips and one above the shoulder. That geometry is what allows the belt to spread load across the chest and pelvis rather than the abdomen alone.

Because the upper anchor is usually carried on the pillar or the seat frame, the height and position of that mount changes from vehicle to vehicle. So does the length of webbing required to reach it comfortably. Both are reasons a three-point assembly is matched to a vehicle rather than bought generically.

Most enquiries in this category are replacements — a belt that will not retract, webbing that has frayed, or a latch plate that no longer seats properly.

Typical applications

  • Front driver position
  • Front passenger position
  • Rear outboard positions
  • Passenger cars and SUVs
  • Commercial vehicle cabs
  • Replacement assemblies

Applications listed are typical examples. Suitability for any specific vehicle should be confirmed before fitting.

Selection considerations

What to check on a three-point belt

  1. Upper anchor positionWhere the shoulder strap is secured — pillar-mounted, seat-mounted, or height-adjustable — changes which assembly fits.
  2. Webbing lengthBelt length is set by the seating position and cabin geometry, not by preference.
  3. Retractor or fixedMost three-point belts retract. Confirm whether the assembly you need includes a retractor unit.
  4. Latch plate styleSliding or fixed latch plates behave differently and are not always interchangeable.
  5. Matching buckle sideThe receiver must accept the latch plate. If either half is being replaced, describe both.

Before you enquire

Information worth having ready

The more of this you can supply, the more precise the answer — and the fewer rounds of questions it takes to get there.

01

Vehicle identity

Make, model, model year and body type. A registration or VIN, if you have it to hand, removes most ambiguity.

02

Seating position

Front or rear, driver or passenger side, outboard or centre. Say which seat the belt serves.

03

Photographs

The existing assembly, its mounting points and any markings on the parts. This is the single most useful thing you can send.

04

Quantity

One seat, a full vehicle set, or a repeat requirement across several vehicles.
